| In
a perfect world there would be no need for Affirmative Action - but we don’t
live in a perfect world. Even in this world the time will come when we no
longer need Affirmative Action - but that time is not now. Right now we
need Affirmative Action to Make America Better.
Some view Affirmative Action as taking jobs and positions away from qualified people and giving them to less qualified minority individuals. Occasionally that may happen, sometimes the individuals may be less qualified - but all of the time it is a process of favoring one group over another. It is a bitter tonic for some to swallow. With Affirmative Action there is disappointment, a feeling of unfairness, and down right resentment. Affirmative Action is not a painless treatment. Losing a position because of Affirmative Action is disappointing, but it is seldom completely debilitating, Americans move on to the next opportunity. Without Affirmative Action there was disappointment, a feeling of unfairness, and down right hopelessness. Affirmative Action is not a miracle cure, it is an expensive treatment - but it is working. Every year more families get a stake in the American Dream - they become Americans rather than simply citizens. And this Makes America Better. For the time being Affirmative Action is necessary. Necessary to spread the American Dream. Necessary to counter the forces trying to fracture our society. Necessary to bring a more diverse group of American talents on-line and working to Make America Better. ### |
