Consumer Protection

Issue and Position Statement

Consumer protection is an issue that will grow in importance in the years ahead.  By taking action now many tragedies can be avoid in years to come.  Animals know very well the importance of tooth and claw - but our government can do with a reminder.

Americans have many fine and effective laws regarding product safety and these should be vigorously enforced.  However in the area of food products more tooth is needed.  Much more tooth is need to:

Remove loopholes from product labeling laws.  If a food product contains a substance, the label should clearly state that it does.

Simply and absolutely define the terms.  If a food product claims to be "organically grown" that should mean that no chemical fertilizers were used in its production - none.  If a product claims to contain no genetically engineered ingredients, it must contain exactly 0% genetically engineered ingredients - zero.

Make food labeling law violations serious.  Violators of food labeling laws must be both caught and punished.  To keep the safety of the American food supply a serious matter - the punishment for violations must also be a serious matter.

Over time more Americans and more American businesses will do more of their work over the Internet - more protection will be needed there.  Laws dealing with crimes committed via the Internet need bigger claws.  Very big claws are needed to:

Prosecute computer virus creation and distribution as the major crime that it is.  These bits of malicious and disguised programming cost Americans and American businesses hundred of millions of dollars each year - some serious jail time seems due.

Vigorously pursue and prosecute computer hackers as the burglars, trespassers, vandals, and thieves that they are.  This game that hackers play has serious consequences for the victims - it’s time the consequences were serious for the perpetrators too.

Support an International law enforcement body to prosecute Internet fraud and pornography where ever it is located.  No longer should criminals be allowed to sit smugly outside our borders and perpetrate crimes against American citizens.

We must plan ahead - so we can have the tooth and claws when needed.  Now is the time to start, it will  Make America Better.
