The Power of the Vice President

9 October 2003

The Vice President of the United States of America wields incredible power - if he chooses to do so. Many don’t seem to realize this and effectively ignore the job and responsibilities.  The Texas sun had evidently baked most vision out of old "Cactus Jack" by the time he compared the job to "a warm bucket of spit".  I have a larger vision, a much larger vision.

That vision centers on a Vice President actively advancing the issue positions he holds.  A Vice President who aggressively uses the power to Make America Better.  While I use it extensively, I did not invent the Internet - but I full well intend to turn loose American Ingenuity to invent a great many other wonderful things.  The power to do this stems from the following sources.

The Ear of the President – The Vice President has access to the President of the United States of America.  The President makes the decisions, but rest assured that before he does he will hear and understand my position on each matter.  Sometimes I will prevail.  The Secret Service may have to create a new White House position - that of Vice Presidential Bouncer.

Influence in the Senate -- The Vice President does not control the United States Senate, but he can strongly influence it’s actions.  The United States Senate reaches it’s own decisions, and it will continue to do so - after it knows the views of the Vice President on the matter at hand.

Access to Information -- The Vice President has access to the information gathering capability of the United States Government - or can have if he works with, or on, the people administering it.  This information will be used to create, refine, and champion sound policies for Making America Better.

Access to the Press -- The words of the Vice President will be carried by the Press - if he has anything to say.  I will have a lot to say about Making America Better.

Access to Foreign Officials -- The Vice President meets foreign decision makers - from this he can get an understanding of their concerns, needs, and priorities.  Armed with this understanding economic and foreign policies can be forged to Make America Better.

The Vice President can support the President when their views coincide - and educate the President when they don’t.  The Vice President of the United States of America can indeed be a powerful ally in the push to Make America Better.  The position does not have to be a reward for political support, or a token ticket balancing item - no, it can be a force to be reckoned with by all politicians.
